As relaxed as a day on the beach, Adrian Lockhart takes his minimal, expressive line and soft washes of colour to where warm sand calms and ocean currents move the body through space. Lockhart’s intimate, lyrical drawings and prints reflect his love of the ocean and beach life. He brings sensuality to these very tactile works and the sureness of his touch can make each mark say so much.
I go to the beach and either remember that experience
in the water and do a quick drawing when I get home or I sit on the beach
and draw figures and other surfers. But it’s utilizing being at the
beach, going surfing rather than saying: okay, I am going to go somewhere
and draw the beach. It’s a fact that I am there; I am enjoying it.
Basically every week I go there, surfing. I go up the coast regularly and
usually the same places.
Adrian was born in 1947 in remote Queenstown, Tasmania. A doodler from the
beginning, his mother always complained that she could never find a piece
of paper without his drawings all over it. In 1970 he moved to Sydney and
while establishing a successful career as a commercial artist he continued
to paint. By the early 1980's he finally decided to concentrate on painting
full-time.
Adrian Lockhart has continued to exhibit in solo exhibitions throughout
Australia nearly every year for the past 18 years and his paintings are
represented in major collections internationally in England, Germany, Canada,
Hong Kong and the USA.
