Biography
Debra Luccio interprets the vigour and movement of dancers: ‘I need
to sweep my arm over the plate. I need the freedom and challenge of stretching
over an expansive surface to express the energy, strength and grace of the
dancers’.
Metropolis Gallery presents Debra Luccio: Dancing In Light, an exhibition
of drawings, drypoints, etchings and monotypes inspired by performances
of the New York City Ballet, the Tiffany Mills Company NY and the Queensland
Ballet. Debra will also share stories of her experiences with these dance
companies in an Artist Floor Talk. Learn about her inspiration and gain
insight into the techniques used to create her artwork for this exhibition.
From etchings based on sketches and photographs created during rehearsals,
to large monotypes of final performances, hear more about the works from
the artist herself.
Luccio has developed her printmaking techniques through experience with
other mediums: ‘This interest really began with charcoal. I thoroughly
enjoy the process of revealing the light, the physicality of sculpting the
figure with the ink on the plate’. The illusion of depth within monotype
can be just as rich as any sculptural form. ‘The work is done in the
studio and usually in one sitting. It is a quick medium, producing exciting
images infused with spontaneity and chance’.
This exhibition at Metropolis Gallery is very timely since exciting news
has just arrived that Debra has been invited by the Australian Consulate
General in New York to mount her first solo show there in March 2010.
Debra Luccio was a recent prize winner at the 2009 CPM National Print Awards
at Tweed River Art Gallery. Her work is represented in the New York City
Public Library; Tiffany Mills Company, NY; Charles Sturt University Art
Collection; Tweed River Art Gallery; St Vincent’s Art Collection,
Melbourne and in private collections nationally and in New Zealand, Paris,
London, Italy and New York.
