Drawings, Monoprints and Drypoints
February 26 - March 14
From Life is a gutsy solo exhibition of drawings, monoprints and drypoints
by emerging Geelong artist Rosanna Avitabile.
This show is a marker in time for this determined young artist and it represents
her commitment to her art and the many years of self-motivated development.
The 43 works in this exhibition have been selected from a large body of
work created mainly during the last year: a period of intense creative focus.
Much of an artist's work is created by observations 'from life' but equally
what sets each artist apart is their own life experience and how they choose
to express and interpret their experience.
It has been a complex and rapid journey of personal and artistic discovery
leading Rosanna simultaneously in many directions, not just to specific
art related studies but also to studies related to anatomy and physiology
and most recently to formal studies in remedial massage. This may explain
why many of the drawings in From Life are almost electric with body energy.
Rosanna's ongoing art education has included research into the work of artists
that help her to make sense of her own raw, expressive and passionate drawings.
In this search for a context and meaning in her own work she discovered
German expressionist artists like Egon Schiele, Emil Nolde and Otto Dix.
She also acknowledges the energy of the work of contemporary artists like
Jan Senbergs, Mike Parr, Brett Whiteley and, more recently, Marco and Debra
Luccio who have been more than generous with their time in mentoring Rosanna.
Most importantly these artists communicated to her through the honest expression
of their line: the simple mark on paper that becomes the signature of the
artist. This is Rosanna Avitabile's first exhibition but these images of
faces and figures, drawn mainly in charcoal or oil stick, already make it
clear that she has much to say through her work. There is maturity in her
powerful but sensitive line drawings, resulting in unique images with an
immediacy of expression of the human condition.
From Life is testimony that Rosanna has now found her own line and her own
voice.
