This exhibition reflects Steve Salo's strong interests in both landscape and portraiture. After an artist residency in 2017 at Police Point on the Mornington Peninsula, Salo has produced inspirational paintings based on that region. His continuing exploration of paint and portraiture has also resulted in highly expressive new works reflecting the human presence.

Salo’s profile as a contemporary artist continues to grow, with paintings shortlisted in a number of prestigious prizes across Australia. It has just been announced that his self portrait Historia – Self Portraithas been chosen to hang in the 2018 Salon des Refusés (selected from Archibald Prize entries) at the National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney, with another large portrait having also been selected in 2016 for this important exhibition.

'Through the visual voice of painting I communicate emotion – from hope, joy and calm, to disappointment, sorrow and inner turmoil. We are complex of mind and spirit. My intent as a contemporary portrait artist is to explore the human psyche through painting these complexities. I am interested in portraying this aspect rather than focussing on the surface level alone. My landscape paintings also go beyond the visual perception, I am more concerned with portraying the feelings evoked by being in a place'.
