Expressions of Landscape
11 - 25 March, 2017

Steve Salo’s solo exhibition Expressions of Landscape explores the impact of land and sea on human emotion: the freedom of feeling both insignificant and empowered in the presence of a landscape that is forever being shaped by weather and time. A connection between person and place. A sense of belonging. I am interested in this aspect rather than focusing on the surface level alone. I am more concerned with portraying feelings evoked by being in a place.

Steve Salo’s profile as a contemporary artist continues to grow with paintings shortlisted in prestigious prizes across Australia and awarded a prize in Florence, Italy. In 2016 he was a finalist in the Salon des Refusés (selected from the Archibald Prize entries) at the National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney, where he also gave an artist talk, and this exhibition toured to the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. He was a finalist in the Len Fox Painting Award at Castlemaine Art Gallery, Kogarah Art Prize (Commended), Waverley Art Prize and the Korea-Australia Arts Foundation Art Prize. In 2015 he was shortlisted for the Mosman Art Prize, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Prospect Portrait Prize, John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize (Highly Commended) and won Best Oil in the Hobsons Bay Art Show.

This year Steve will take up an artist residency in the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Police Point Artist in Residence Program. He’ll explore the peninsula and live and paint in the historic gatekeeper’s cottage at Portsea. Steve is also excited that Frankston Arts Centre has invited him to exhibit his Back to Back Theatre Portraits in their Curved Wall Gallery later this year.
