Eric Thake

(1904-82)

Collectors Show

13 October – 4 November

Studies: NGV School 1921; George Bell School, 1925-28.
Apprenticed to a process engraving firm in 1918, he developed his interest in printmaking and graphic design which often displayed great wit in clever visual puns such as the image for his 1972 Christmas card An Opera House in Every Home.

He held his first exhibition at Georges Gallery, Melbourne, 1947. By 1960 his work included designs for stamps for Australia Post, cover designs for Meanjin, and a large number of linocuts and bookplates. He had also become Australia’s first painter of surrealist pictures, many painted during his service with RAAF. His permanent place as a local master of graphic design is the logical outcome of an attitude that never wavered in its allegiances.

There has been a growing interest in his wonderful Christmas card linocuts, produced from 1941 to 1975. A retrospective of his was held at the NGV in 1970. Geelong Gallery held a solo exhibition of his work in 2006. The State Library of Victoria has a substantial collection and on line exhibition of his work.

Represented: NGA; AGNSW; AGWA; NGV; QAG; TMAG; AWM; SLV; SLNSW; regional galleries Ballarat, Castlemaine, Geelong, MPRG, Newcastle; Deakin Uni.; Flinders Uni.; La Trobe Uni.; Uni. Adelaide Library.
