About Pip Williams
Born 1950 in Canberra where I grew up during the development of the National capital under Menzies watchful eyebrows.
Moved to Sydney in late teens & then to Melbourne where I graduated as an Occupational Therapist.
Married & moved to country Victoria, near Ballarat, & whilst raising a family became a ‘crafty hippie' amongst the sheep & goats. Dabbled in most crafts & exhibited in the first Miniature Textiles exhibition held at the Ararat Gallery(1981). As my husband was the director there for several years, I participated in several workshops led by such artists as Mirka Mora.
We then made the ‘seachange' to St Leonards & set up & operated a restaurant/gallery in the town. At that stage my husband was the artist & I was the chef!
Have travelled extensively overseas, & more recently to the Central Deserts of Australia .I have also worked twice in Japan, lecturing in Occupational Therapy. These travels have inspired me in subject matter & techniques.
Inspired by my art teacher daughter, I took up lino printing in 2002 & have continued to teach myself & to develop the skills involved in both the intricacies of design & the sheer excitement of the layering of colours. I visited an aboriginal workshop at Indulkana, near Coober Pedy which specialised in lino prints. This inspired me to launch into colour as the outback cannot be portrayed in black & white.
My prints are influenced by the Bellarine landscape as well as my travels. I enjoy the hands on technique & the ability to lay down many colours & design plates to achieve a sense of mystery, surprise & shimmering colour.
I have also discovered it is always a work in progress, as it is possible to reprint, in any direction or colour until satisfied or sufficiently surprised.
It is an amazing medium & results can range from simple naivety to complex abstractions. It is difficult to return to working small & with a limited palette once you start to experiment!
